Itinerary-January 16th, 2008

9am-Elizabeth Fry Society
10am-RCMP Beat Constables*
11am-Kamloops City Council and staff
12-1pm-Kamloops Food Bank and Outreach Society
2pm-ASK, Kamloops AIDS Society
3pm-Interior Indian Friendship Centre
4pm-Kamloops Youth Safe House

*While this was not on our original schedule we met these officers on the street and had a very productive discussion with them.

Thanks so much for taking the time to get outside of the big city and see what faces the homeless in the smaller cities and rural areas. These are the forgotten of the forgotten people. The girls at the house really appreciated having you listen to them. It was a great experience for them. We all send our thanks to you and your team and wish you the best on this endeavor.

Dear Friends,

Homelessness and affordable housing are in crisis in our province. A citizen’s movement that places increasing pressure on all levels of government to act is needed.

We invite you to join us in the Homes for All movement that is building STANDs in every community in the province. From one site in Vancouver, we have grown to 15 and are now ready to create STANDS throughout the province on April 4th

For the cost of materials ($25), we are providing STAND kits - a large banner saying "Homes for All", eight turquoise scarves, and leaflets explaining the housing crisis in our province.

A message from David Chudnovsky - Official Opposition Critic for Homelessness in BC

Dear Friends,

Homelessness in British Columbia is a crisis that we cannot and must not ignore.

FINDING OUR WAY HOME is a response to this crisis. I am touring the province to hear from people who are homeless about their experiences, their challenges and obstacles and their hopes and suggestions for a better future.

I am meeting with front line workers who provide services to the homeless.

I am consulting with local government officials.

British Columbians value equality, decency and democracy. We want to make sure everyone has the basics – food, clothing, shelter and an adequate income – so that we can all benefit from the potential our province has to offer.

But homelessness undermines these values and principles.

Homelessness threatens the health and safety of our communities. It affects every city and every town in British Columbia.

If you, like me, want to do something about the crisis of homelessness, I invite you to be part of FINDING OUR WAY HOME. Write to this blog with your suggestions and ideas. Participate in the online poll. Write to Premier Campbell and tell him about your concerns. Write to Opposition Leader Carole James. Have a look at the Official Opposition Caucus Website.

And when I visit your part of the province help me understand the reality of homelessness in your community.
